On 5 March 2013, my son took his motorcycle, a Big Boy 200, to Kempton Park Motorcycles for a service. The workshop instruction was completed as follows:
1. Service and tune-up
2. Check lights on clocks not working.
3. Check rear brakes.
4. Check indicators not working.
5. Check R/H head light
6. Check charge rate.
7. Quote first
They were also requested to have the motorcycle ready by 15h00. The document that he was requested to sign has a number of ambiguous and vague clauses and contains a clause which reads as follows" I require from the company a detailed written quote before proceeding with any work"
At approximately 14h30 he phoned the shop to find out if the motorcycle was ready for collection.
He was informed that the engine had been opened and a camshaft bearing had been replaced. The cost of that together with the other service items requested would have been in excess of R4000.00.
He immediately indicated that he did not have that amount of money. He was taken aback that repairs had been undertaken without him being quoted on it. He was also informed that his motorcycle would only be available on 6 March. This resulted in a day's wages of approximately R400 being lost.
