Negligence damaged our furniture

Master Movers damaged 3 pieces of our furniture - they broke a glass cabinet, a wooden stool and destroyed a mattress.

The mattress did have a lump on one side before it was collected, from being stored on its side for 24 hours, but it was usable and did not need replacing.

On delivery in Pietermaritzburg the mattress had gone from 'squashed' on the collection document to 'warped and completely collapsed' on the receiving document. We watched the mattress come out of the truck on its side with furniture on top of it. The delivery employee stated that this was also the case when he had picked it up from Durban, and that it had been transported on its side from Durban to Pietermaritzburg with goods on top of it. As it is a pocketed mattress, this is the way to ruin it, something a moving company should know.

As insurance is for accidental damage, and this was obvious negligence, I sought to claim back for the damage, and it took over 2 months for them to respond. When they did they were rude and told me it had been transported flat (not true). They refused to even compensate part of the cost of a replacement, despite the fact that it was usable before they damaged it.
