6 weeks, 5 emails, and not even an acknowledgement

After hiring a car through Avis in South Africa, I returned home to find almost GBP500 removed from my account without explanation or authorisation. After spending almost an hour attempting to get through to their premium-rate number, I received an email which apparently 'explained' the charges. It stated some of the charges were for damages, but did not provide any proof of what these were. They also claimed the tank was not full, despite it being filled up at a petrol station next to the centre. To cap it all off, the amounts contained in their PDF attachment didn't even remotely reconcile to the amount removed from my account. Since this point I have emailed 5 times attempting to get an explanation, and have received nothing - not even an acknowledgement or confirmation they're looking into the issue. Looking at various forums, it's clear thousands of people have had a similar experience. I just hope more people do their research and stop using Avis - it is the worst experience I've ever had with a large, international company. They treat their customers appallingly.
