Charged for insurance I didn't request

I rented a car from Avis in July. I made the reservation through [URL Removed] & specifically excluded the OPTIONAL insurance. I pre-paid the R600 car hire charge (that includes compulsory insurance). When I arrived at the branch, I signed the usual form for collection of the car, and swiped my credit card for a R1000 (kept in reserve).

I later saw that -R600 was deducted from the reserve. When I queried it through the call centre, I was told that in addition to the fuel and GPS charge, the optional insurance charge WAS deducted. I explained that did not ask for it, nor was it offered to me in the branch since the service lady hardly spoke to me.

I was then told that I must have signed for it. I signed for the collection of the vehicle, as I already pre-paid the car hire charge. An enquiry was then logged with the branch, who was suppose to get back to me. I've heard nothing.

I'd like a refund from Avis or a valid explanation for why I owe them for the optional insurance.

The lack of transparency & failure to come back to me makes me WONDER if this is some clever ploy to trick people into paying more than what they should.
