High fuel consumption is my problem

I bought a 2009 Honda Civic 1.8 VXI in late 2011. It's a joy to drive, but it always had extremely high fuel consumption. I seldom get better than 13l/100km in the city and 7.5 on the highway. I'll never reach the specification of 7 (combined) and it's costing me 30% more in petrol than the spec claims or other (even old) cars achieve. Anyway, the car also shuddered during braking at high speed. I mentioned these problems to dealer when I took the car for its 45k service (still under warranty). The feedback I got was: The ECU was reset and they didn't notice any shudder! The shudder remained and the ECU reset didn't do anything for the fuel consumption. Took it back and was told that it was the only thing they could do if the ECU diagnostics showed no faults. As I understand it then, if there are no faults reported by the ECU, the car is in perfect condition and there will be no further investigation into the matter since it's obviously my imagination. Since then the cause of the brake shudder was quickly found by my own mechanic and repaired. The high fuel consumption problem remains though. This has been my 3rd and sadly my last Honda, since they care nothing for their product.
