False assessment of problem and ridiculous quo

My car was towed in to McCarthy Silver Lakes on Wednesday, 29 May 2013 arounf lunch-time, after my wife got stranded. I asked for a quote to fix whatever was wrong with the gearbox. It was impossible to get the car into any gear. The next day I received a quote for R53000 (parts and labour included) to replace the gearbox. I was informed that if I don't accept their quote, I have to pay a strip and quote fee of R627.

I discussed the quote with 2 other parties, and described the symptoms. They both said it sounded fishy and that I should get an alternative quote.

On Friday, 31 May, I paid McCarthy's strip and quote fee and had the car towed to another service provider, who informed me on Monday morining that the clutch had to be replaced. He repaired it and I received he car back on Tuesday morning. Parts, oil and labour: R5000.

Was the incorrect quote by McCarthy Silver Lakes deliberate or due to incompetence? How often don't we just accept the quote to get the work done?
