Storing Client Credit card details

It has recently come to my attention that both Strand and Somerset West branches are saving clients credit card details at the cash desk, it was said that they are on a piece of paper and post-it notes.

I would like to know how any company can condone the storing of credit card details, Name, Credit Card number Expiry date and CVV. Now not only are they stored without the clients consent or knowledge, they are left in a completely insecure area accessible by every single staff member.

What would happen to those stores and the companies reputation if a staff member decided to take a few or all of those cards home and go on a jolly shopping spree, yes he/she would be the one performing the illegal act, but the company will be equally if not more liable than them as it was the company, or at least the branches that decided it was ok to store such sensitive and valuable information int eh first place and then to do so int he least secure location possible. The only way it could possible be less secure is if they were stuck on the front door facing the street.
