Credit Card Details Copying

When taking out a new line with Cell C they attempted to photocopy the front and back of my Credit Card.

I refused of course.

This would leave them and their staff with my card number, expiry number and CVV and enable them and their staff and who ever they share this information with to make "card not present" purchases as they wish, as one would with telephonic or online purchases.

Essentially cell C are opening me up to credit card risk if I allowed it.

Is this official practice?
