What is the point of paying a medical aid?

I pay medical aid every month never claim but yet I had to go for a mammogram (ordered by my doctor as there was cause for concern) this was last November. Now I get called by he doctors wanting R1400 from me as my "savings" we're depleted. This is crazy, something a woman has to go for but yet I must pay? How should I pay for this Liberty??? Maybe I should withhold your payment in order to pay what you won't? Thanks for absolutely nothing!
