After money was debited to my account and I saw it was to repay my son's student loan I contacted Student Loan Dept. Sarie Strydom kept on interrupting me when I tried to tell my story and threatened to hang up when I told her to keep quiet and listen. She informed me that if we had not submitted proof of my son's registration that they would automatically put a scheduled repayment in place debiting me, the surety. Apart from this being in contravention of SA law, as they should have sought repayment from my son first, it is common courtesy and normal business practice to endeavor to contact either my son or I prior to putting the payment in place without our consent or knowledge. We mention that Matthew, our son, had been in contact with the same lady prior to the aforementioned to try and put a repayment plan in place and was not told that they had not received the proof of registration for 2012, which was sent in June 2012. Again surely if you maintain you have not received requested documents you follow up with the customer. As a result she informed me that the interest rate had been increased without any communication with us at all.
