Absa
Rejected Home Insurance Claim

After taking 44 days to get an assessor to my property, ABSA rejected my insurance claim for storm damage to retaining walls.
Reasons mentioned included:
1. Defects in design or construction
2. Retaining walls not built according to registered structural engineer's specifications.
My issue with this is:
1. The wall was built according to a plan approved by Durban City Engineer's Department,
2. I'm in possession of a Foundation Trench Inspection Certificate from a registered consulting geotechnical engineering company,
3. Wall was certified by Durban City Engineer's Department as completed in accordance with approved plan.
It now becomes apparent that for those of you who do have household and building insurance with ABSA, please ignore the government appointed authorities when doing any construction. There appears to be no need to get plans designed and approved by a registered structural engineer and no need to get a city engineers certificate upon completion, as this doesn't equate to a successful claim.
It appears that ABSA Idirect has more insight into building construction than the relevant legal authorities.
Sleep peacefully Idirect policy holders.
