Insane interest on loan account

I took out a loan with African Bank 3 years back, and later experienced serious financial distress. I phoned African bank to make arrangements on my loan account, however, whenever I enquire about my balance it doesn't seem to reduce. I later spoke to a consultant that informed me that my interest amounts to R500 monthly which I fail to understand how can interest amount go that high.
