On 12.10.2013, I was at the Standard Bank ATM (Hillfox) to get a statement and do interbank transfers. I inserted my debit card and the ATM prompted for my PIN number, which I entered. I then got the response that my PIN number was incorrect, I immediately tried to cancel the transaction to retrieve the card, but the ATM machine would not allow this. Within a minute, whilst I was still trying to figure out how to retrieve the card, my cell phone beeped at 12:39 stating that R4000 had been withdrawn. I received another alert at 12:40, reflecting another withdrawal of R1000.I realised immediately that a had been committed. I then phoned the CARD Stop No. to report this and block all cards linked cards. I was given a case number and ref number. I was contacted by the investigators of Standard Bank today who informed me that they will not be refunding ANY of the money as they are not liable for ATM . I find this unacceptable as I was informed by Standard Bank officials that they are aware of the activities at the Hillfox ATM, yet nowhere are there warning signs alerting clients to this risk? They are aware of this- the bank should take measures to protect consmers?
