Extremely unhappy

I received a call today to inform me that my "cheque" account opened in 2002 was in an overdraft of R39k. My concern is that I have never been informed of this previously, I have received no statements regarding this, and have not received any telephone calls or msgs left to contact them. I stopped banking with ABSA in 2006, not even at this stage was I informed that there is an overdraft on this account. Now, 11 years later, they are claiming R39k. This is ridiculous. The strangest part is that they claim to have tried contacting me but could not get a hold of me, however, I had a personal loan with ABSA which I paid off this year, and they were in constant contact with me. The lady that contacted me today was from the attorneys so she could not give me much information, around what the original amount was, and now I need to go into the bank to sort this out. According to her payments were made on the account when I was under debt review in 2009, I also have no knowledge of this, as debt therapy does not provide you with statements. I cannot explain my anger and frustration with this institution, and will be sending a formal complaint to the ombudsman if this cannot be sorted.
