Standard Bank
Reimbursement of cost of call to Standard Bank

Business & Finance

On 8 June 2013 I visited Standard Bank to inform them that I was going to Phuket, Thailand, from 29 June - 5 July 2013 and planned on using my card whilst there - I wanted my card activated for this purpose. The Card Division confirmed that my card was activated for international purchases. I believed I had made all the necessary arrangements to experience a hassle free holiday in Thailand with ready access to my cash. On 2 July I withdrew money at an ATM in Phuket with no problems. On 4 July I tried to withdraw more money from the same ATM without success. I went into the Bank to draw money over the counter, also without success. I phoned STD Bank from my Hotel room to sort out problem and, as a result, incurred a cost of /- R500. On my return to SA I tried, without success, to recover the cost of the call from STD Bank. They informed me that they were only following standard procedures and blocked my account due to extraordinary activity. In my view, one withdrawal well within my daily withdrawal limit in an area where I was expected to be does not constitute extraordinary activity. I believe STD Bank is not acting in good faith by refusing to honour my claim for reimbursement.
