Standard Bank
Sharing my details with direct marketing companies

Business & Finance

Standard Bank phoned me a few weeks ago to offer me a credit card. I agreed, and at the end of the phone call with the call centre agent, I was asked if I would like my contact details to be shared with other companies for direct marketing. My answer was this: "absolutely not! "
Since then I have received AT LEAST one call or sms every day from various direct marketing companies, but most days it is more than one.
I have always been very careful to prevent this from happening - I don't give out my cell and email to every and any person who asks for it. I understand I am bound to have spam occasionally, but it has always been exactly that - occasional.
It is uncanny that since that phone call, my spam has gone through the roof. Unfortunately, with these cases, it is pretty much impossible to prove, but the 'coincidence' speaks for itself. There is nothing SB could do to make this better, short of personally phoning each and every company they gave my number to, and having my details removed. Call centre agents MUST be trained to understand that it is illegal and a very serious offence to give out personal details without express permission. SB have lost my business forever.
