Building Loan Application taking 5 months!!!

I have submitted a building loan application with Standard Bank in December 2012 after referring to their online affordability calculator and saw that I will qualify comfortably. I received my first ref number on 14/12/2012 (004290707) expecting that not much will happen and that I will have an answer somewhere in January 2013 as it was over the festive season. From there it went down hill. Eventually at the end of February 2013 I had submitted all the documentation that was required. I have had since I started had the following reference numbers and all ended in "application currently not proceeding" and had to submit bank statements and payslips twice due to Standard bank that can not give me a simple answer of "Loan approved or Loan declined", 004298844, 0044312889, 004324269, 004350765, 004362002, 004382518, 004387962 and the last one is 004400370. The problem is that the home loans consultant does not what to do anymore as the retention amount that the bank want is almost R800 000 more that what I applied for! How can this be, seems there are several problems that need to be sorted out internally. I opened a prestige account and will subsequently close this soon if not resolved soon.
