British Airways Profits from Medical Emergency

My father was due to fly on BA Flight 56 to Heathrow, London tomorrow night (19 March) at 20:15 via Johannesburg. He is retired and lives near Hermanus and towards the end of last week he had a heart attack and was rushed into hospital first in Hermanus and from there to Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. We informed BA last week of what was happening and we sent BA a letter from the doctor explaining he had a heart attack and asking them to postpone his flight. As it happens, he is now being sent in for a double by-pass operation on the day he was supposed to fly out.

BA will not accept the doctors letter and want us to supply "more medical records" as proof that my father is indeed ill and in hospital. The doctors letter we supplied has the name and contact details of the attending physician. Why can't they call the attending physician to confirm what transpired? BA will not accept this as sufficient proof and is now charging us R2, 510 to change the dates of the trip. This is truly unethical and a case of an airline profiteering from a medical emergency!
