Lose all Airtime

My MTN 200 TopUp contract has come to an end, so I contacted MTN to find out about upgrading/changing to prepaid. I have over R1000 airtime available on the contract., however I was informed that I would lose ALL my airtime immediately, even if I upgrade to another TopUp contract.
This is pathetic - this is air time I have paid for and accumulated every month. I am very disappointed with MTN and am sorry that I ever made the mistake of signing up with them in the first place.
Browsing other complaints reveals that many MTN customers have experienced this. Why am I not able to keep this airtime or convert it to data bundles??
As far as I'm concerned it's a MAJOR RIP-OFF! MTN was very eager to sign me up as a client (after leaving another service provider), but now they can't offer me what my previous service provider could.
