Charging cancellation fee after my 1 year contract

I took out a 1 year contract at this gym 23 Jan 2013. On the 16 of Jan 2014 I phoned my gym to notify them that I do not wish to continue with my membership as the fee increase for the year was a bit excessive. The individual I talk to very rudely told me I should send the club an email to notify the of the cancellation. I then sent the club an email notifying them of this, and I was told that someone would get back to me within 2 days. this never happened. I then phoned them on 29 Jan 2014 to enquire them on this and I was told that the cancellation was done and I had to pay a R194 cancellation fee. I was never notified about this. After numerous calls at my expense I was diverted back to my club and a lady told my that she will phone me back after she had taken up the situation with her manager. this also never happened. This morning I phoned them again and a gentleman helped me by sending me a copy of the contract I signed stating that they will notify me in writing close to the end of my contract and I should then reply whether I would like to continue with my membership or not. I never received a notification. they then said I am liable for paying. this is very poor service.
