Harassment for paid up account over 8 years old

More then 8 years ago I paid Virgin Active in full. The amount was plus minus R4200.00. Since then I did not hear anything from them for 3-4 years. Suddenly they started phoning and smsing me every 3 months. I asked them why didn't they phoned me earlier and a lady informed me that my number changed and is has not changed in the past 10 years. I have sent the proof of payment to them on many occasions and then they stops phoning me. According to the Law as I know it you need to keep all proof of payments for 5 years, in that respect I do not have the proof of payment anymore. I never had another Virgin Active account after this was paid. Now suddenly I received an sms from them that they have handed me over to the attorneys for an outstanding account.
Please can you assist of advice me on this matter.
