Owing them while I cancelled the contract

I had joined the Zone Fitness gym on November of 2011. I believe on the 16th. The Guy who helped me was Simba. And I signed the same day and gave him R50 for card. and R200 for first month if im not mistaken. The following day I learned I have to relocate to JHB and I immediately went there and cancelled. And he told me because I haven't attend, and its within 5 days I can cancelled. No problem.

Last year 2012, I got a call from creditworx or something saying I owe zone fitness money. And I explained to them what had happened. And i called zone fitness and spoke to a Lady which I forgot her name, and she told me it was a mistake and it will be fixed. And now get another call this year saying I owe Zone fitenss R6000 from lawyers. And they said they need a proof that I cancelled and I say i didn't get any as per Guy (Simba) who worked there. Now today I have spoken to a lady responsible for Accounts and she says I have to pay because there is nothing she can do. I cannot pay this. And my question is why didnt they call me the first month I didnt pay or attend the gym. Cause i am sure they have records I never attend the gym. I even joined the Zone fitness in Johannesburg.
