Canceling of contract

My husband and I are relocating, we had a gym contract with family fitness for quite a while now. when we cancelled we signed a document saying that we give 30 days notice and our last debit order will be on the last day of April (payments are made in advance) thus we paid for the 30 days notice given till the end of May. when my husband went to the gym in May he was told that the contract was cancelled at the end of April, even though we cancelled from end of May and did pay for the month of May already.
