Backpack as my handbag

I went to Pick N Pay in Goldman street on Saturday 12/01/2013 and I was advised by security to hand in my backpack as baggage. I told him that I use the backpack as my handbag and that have all my personal belonings in there, both my purses, my cellphone, my id, personal documents, medication etc. but he insisted that I need to hand it in. I then went looking for the manager and she also told me that I need to hand in my back pack and again I tried to explain that I cannot do that as all my personal belongings are in there and that I use the backpack as my handbag. She advised me that it does not matter and that I need to hand it in and to carry my purse in my hand. I then told her that I cannot do that and that I will go to Shoprite rather and she told me then to do so.
I have been doing all my shopping there for the last 3 years because I don't have a car and I use the backpack because it is easier to carry then a handbag which falls from my shoulder when I carry my groceries. I have been a loyal customer to that PNP, where is their loyalty to customers. I understand that there needs to be security but it should not interfere with customer's rights.
