Woolworths
PIN & Signature when paying by credit/debit card

Shops, Products, Services

We all know that Woolworths does not respond whether one speaks to them face-to-face, over the phone or in writing. So, I do not expect a response.

We buy food at Woolworths because it is convenient. Besides the fact that there are food items on the shelves that have already reached their sell by date, we still sort through those and buy the items that are still fresh.

However, when paying by debit or credit card, even though one's PIN has been entered and a confirmation SMS has been received, they insist on getting a signature!! The reason for the PIN is so that a signature is not necessary as it opens one up to. This has been accepted in most countries in the world and most shops in South Africa - the PIN is enough!

This afternoon at the Lynnwood Bridge Woolworths, being totally annoyed by the practice of wanting a signature as well, I refused to sign, saying that they already have my payment, so the teller called the floor manager. The floor manager was insistent that I sign, which I was at that stage even more determined that I would not sign. I walked out the door.

Surely there are others that are just as frustrated by this outdated practice?
