A simple exchange turned into a nightmare

I have this POLO shirt worth R749 which I was given as gift on weekend and today I went to Edgars to exchange or be given a voucher if possible as I was on lunch & in a hurry. A lady so called Maria help me, at first she told me that I cannot exchange the item as I do not have the receipt & when I told her that I did phone the customer service before I came in, she said she was going to call the manager at the back which took her 10min to come back with her. The manager told me that I cannot be given a voucher, what I can do is exchange then I went to the floor I came back with a pair of NIKE tekkies worth R669. Maria said she was going at the back again to call the manager. This time she took 15min & she came back with A different manager & HE told me to go back at the floor to pick up something that will make the amount to be equal to that one of the shirt then I did as I was told & came back with face cloths. She scanned the shirt & look at me & said this shirt on my system is R350, How possible is that? I feel that I was given wrong information on the phone, treated unfairly, humiliated, waisted my petrol to drive there and waisted my time running back and forth in the shop
