Tiger Brands
Tastic Basmati rice has Rice Weevil

Shops, Products, Services

I recently informed Tiger Brands of a Bonnet rice packet infested with insects (Rice Weevil), to which they responded by sending me a voucher and an apology letter. We redeemed the voucher at Shoprite Protea Gardens and bought Basmati and Jasmin Rice 1kg packets. To my horror, the Basmati has the same infestation, while the Jasmin seems clear.
I tried calling both the customer care lines on the packet and letter, and could not get a consultant. What worries me is that it seems Tastic might have a serious infestation and are not warning consumers to check before using. The Rice Weevil lays eggs in the grain and hatch after 35 days (source: Rice Knowledge Bank), which means it might be consumed before hatching depending on when it's packaged and used. I'm not sure of the health implications, but find this extremely disconcerting to say the least.
I think a warning of some kind is forthcoming as the thought of consuming either the insect, or its eggs is worrying, even if one follows the instructions of soaking and rinsing.
It states in the letter that their foods are packaged and manufactured under strictly controlled conditions, but this might mean that this may not be the case.
