Dishwasher does not wash dishes

My partner and I recently decided to buy a dishwasher. Wanting to go with a well known brand, choosing Defy was easy enough. Unfortunately, our dishwasher does not actually wash any dishes. We literally have to scrub all our dishes clean with dish soap before putting anything in the dishwasher and even then I am not impressed with the results. Having been raised with a Defy dishwasher, I am used to having to put in dirty dishes and having them come out looking new. I am sorely disappointed with this purchase.
