Partner protection plan

What is the use of having a protection policy if u can't use it. My husband's contract was cancelled about six months ago i could not keep up with the payments and phoned them to make arrangements when the tele clerk reminded me of my policy and gave me the number to phone to have it activated. When phoning them they said i must write a letter to explain why i'm only using the policy now together with other documents and dates. That information he will have to get from headoffice in jhb and petrol is not free. Why don't they just phone the labour dep and find out if he applied for unemploiment and even get the relevant dates from them. What about my funeral and parent funeral plan is that going to be handled in the same way!!! ignored for convenience sake.
