WARRANTY DEFECT MADE THE CUSTOMER'S PROBLEM!!!

On 15 July 2013 I purchased a 1 Terabyte external Hard drive (Seagate) including a laptop. I bought the drive specifically to backup everything I had on my previous laptop and all usb's. After I have backed up more than 300gigs of data the drive was working perfectly... however after a week the drive failed and did not switch on again. On 29 July 2013 I took the drive back to Makro... they however told me that they can send the drive in for repairs however that will void the warranty and there is no guarantee that they would be able to retrieve all my data! I suggested that I will buy a new drive and send it to retrieve my data and then put it on the new drive, they however refused to take back the failed drive. Now I am stuck with a broken drive which I paid almost R1200 for and I don't have my data. I bought the drive for a reason, I backed up 300gigs of my life and now it is lost... and all Makro is telling me is that Seagate does not cover the data as warranty!!! Where is the days where a retail company goes the extra step for a customer? All I want is a new drive and the lost date retrieved!!! And how can the warranty of something already broken be voided!?!?! :-(
