Passport not Acceptable as ID

About an hour ago I went to Shoprite to collect money sent to me via their Money Transfer. The cashier (who had no customer service skills) refused to accept my Passport as Identification &said they needed my ID as they used the barcode for money transfer. I said surely theres a way they could manually enter my ID no. She said no &that I needed an affidavid? What I found contradictory was that an affidavid doesn't have a barcode which meant there was a way because when I returned, they never even read it, they just looked at it then gave me my money. I evidently was late to work coming back from lunch which upset me more. As far as I know, a passport is a legal/binding form of ID in this country, is it not? I doubt i'll use this service in future as they are full of rubish &don't seem to want to help at all!!!
