Pick 'n Pay
Smoked chicken had gone off same day I'd bought it

Shops, Products, Services

I went shopping early this morning at Hayfields (Pietermaritzburg) Pick 'n 'Pay, and boughts some smoked chicken for my lunch. I started preparing food for myself and another person, and when I snipped open the vacuum-sealed smoked chicken, a disgusted smell engulfed the kitchen. Both my friend and I could smell that the chicken was off. When I looked closer, a little patch of the chicken was pale grey, instead of orange. I threw it away before I thought to check the sell by date. But regardless of what the sell by date was, it is a dangerous practice to sell chicken like this, it can make people sick, besides costing them money on meat they can't use. This year I've had two tubs of ice-cream that the lid wasn't closed properly on, one box of fruit juice that the lid had been undone (so the juice was open to the environment), and now this 'off' chicken. Customers shouldn't have to always check that produce is correctly sealed and hasn't gone off, but clearly with Pick 'n Pay this is the way it must be. What a shame.
