Cancelling of a contract

I cancelled my contract the 25th of February 2012 with the lady working in the account department and she told me to give a months' notice because of the contract I had and there after the contract will be cancelled. I did as the lady told me to and paid my last amount the end of March 2012 and as per the lady everything was in order so my contract was cancelled. A year later a get a call to say that I've been handed over to the attorney's to get the money because I wasn't paying for the last year and my account has been suspended because I'm not paying. Why did I go through all the effort to cancel the contract, just to be handed over to the attorneys?
