A year of Billing for nothing

We received a bill for the directory. when I queried it, I was told this was for this year! We have not had a phone since 2012 before October. When I told the lady this she said she had a recording that said that we were happy to renew. I listened to the recording. It was my husband, but my issue was the call was made on the 13/12/2011 for the year of 2013! How can they possibly make someone take up a contract for a year, a year in advance?? Seems like a and a rip off. I did speak to someone in December 2012 (no recording was replayed to me of that call) to tell them we no longer had a phone line. At that point they should have checked their records and ensured no further contracts were in place.
