Urgent Complaint Regarding Surgical Appointment Delay – Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital

Health & Medicine

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding the distressing experience I endured at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.

On 18 June 2025, I visited the hospital after suffering a serious hand injury caused by a fall from a taxi’s sliding door. During the medical assessment, a scan revealed a nail embedded in my hand, which had been there for years following a previous, improperly conducted operation. This discovery was deeply shocking, as I had grown up unaware of the foreign object in my body.

The hospital team scheduled a corrective operation for 07 November 2025, and I was advised to arrive by 07:00 AM. I arrived early at 06:09 AM and waited patiently with other patients throughout the day. However, at 18:00 PM, I was informed that the hospital had run out of beds, and my operation was rescheduled to 28 February 2026, with instructions to arrive on 27 February 2026.

This experience has left me emotionally devastated and physically distressed. Spending an entire day at the hospital, only to be turned away, has caused me immense pain and despair. I am deeply concerned about the delay in receiving urgent surgical care and the lack of communication throughout the day.

I respectfully request that this matter be investigated and that steps be taken to ensure:

Patients are not subjected to such prolonged waiting without updates.

Surgical appointments are honored, especially in cases involving long-standing medical complications.

Emotional and physical trauma caused by such delays is acknowledged and addressed.

I appreciate the efforts of the medical staff who initially diagnosed my condition, but I urge the hospital and the Department of Health to treat this complaint with the seriousness it deserves.

Sincerely,
Nomfundo Mlambo
