Membership Benefits unfairly Suspended

I lost my job at the end of April and was unable to pay my member premium at the end of May 2013. I phoned Fedhealth up front around mid May and then also sent the facts of my situation to them early in June by e-mail. We had been on their "Maxima Standard" option and I requested to downgrade to their cheaper "Entry Zone" option until I would be able to upgrade again, possibly in January 2014.

They replied that they do not do downgrades but only upgrades.

How can a person with financial problems be expected to upgrade when a short term downgrade is what is required to help him through his financial problem situation?

Their attitude towards people in financial stress situations is bad! We are an elderly couple who now have no medical aid benefits because of their refusal to accommodate us, even for the short term. They are forcing us to go to another medical aid scheme and in doing so we have to go through a 3 month waiting period to qualify for medical aid benefits again. We feel that this is grossly unfair and we are presently suffering because of their unfair decision not to allow us to downgrade, but rather to have suspended our benefits!
