Rip-off repai

Computers & Services

My laptop's bios was infected by a virus and in an attempt to repair it, the bios was removed and the entire computer stopped working. This occurred 2 days before the shop warranty expired and I was away on business. When I returned, I took it back to the company I bought it from, but alas, there was nothing they could do. They took it in for repair, but said they could not replace the bios chip, as they could not get the parts and I would need to take it to Acer themselves.

The unit was there for assessment and repair. Within a few hours of dropping it off, I had a quote for the following
1. Replacement Motherboard R 2039.62. ex vat
2. Replacement Hard Disk R 1000.00 ex vat (matrix sells them for R 699 inc vat) I backed up data before sending it in,
3. Replacement Keyboard R 295.00 ex vat (nothing wrong with keyboard when I took it in)

Is Acer unable replace a simple BIOS chip? I haven't been able to ask that question, as I am always put thru to support and listen to their lovely adverts on acer advantage (which won't help me now), then after 30 minutes, the line goes dead. This has happened 3 times.

I hope I get a response this way.
