Why must I pay?

I purchased a new Nissan Navara 4l in 2008 from dealership in Pretoria. A lovely vehicle I must add. About 8 months ago my fuel gauge started acting up. (obviously just after the warranty expired.) It will give very erratic readings. I mentioned this to another Navara owner a short while ago and he informed me that his Navara had a recall on the fuel gauge and his was replaced by Nissan. I left my Navara at the agents this morning for the 105k km service and mentioned to them that my fuel gauge is faulty. I just had a call from the agents informing me that there's a charge involved of R6500 to fix the faulty gauge. My question now is why must I pay if Nissan knew about faulty gauges on Navara's? My vehicle is obviously part of this problem they had. A vehicles fuel gauge is not supposed to break/give problems... EVER!! Come on Nissan???
