Mercedes-benz South Africa
Persistent problem never rectified, costs more

Cars & Transport

18 months ago my son's A160 would not start at all. Mercedes told me that it was the radio drawing current. It cost R1, 600 to fix the radio. Every 3 months after that, the car would not be able to start - same problem every time. After a year the radio manufacturer refused to uphold the guarantee and I was told to remove the radio. Which we did. That was August. Last week the car would not start. Mercedes told me that the battery had now gone flat (not surprising after being run down consistently by radio). Original quote was R3, 400! Only when I phoned back to query was that modified to R1, 200. After labour total cost was R2, 400! I was told that the high cost (cf Tonnesson's - fitted battery R850) was because of the quality parts Mercedes uses. But the quality radio is what caused the problem in the first place and that quality radio is now sitting on my son's desk! I feel completely ripped off. The radio problem was never solved, despite my paying for it and then I had to replace the battery caused by the radio problem at a huge cost. Every time Mercedes had the car it was also weeks at a time, with no offer of a courtesy car! Shocking service!
