Honda Civic, hole in transmission from dowell pin

Cars & Transport

On Friday 18 October 2013 after having parked my car (current mileage just below 64 000km) I noticed a puddle of oil in the driveway and a streak of oil from halfway up the road. Upon further investigation it was apparent that the oil must have been coming from the gearbox. I found this odd because there was no notice that there may have been fault with the gearbox while driving the car. The following morning I had towed the car to Honda Westrand.

On the Monday thereafter I was informed that there was a hole in the gearbox due to a dowell pin that had come loose and was picked up by the flywheel. As you can imagine this came as a great shock as I have not heard of such before and as admitted by the customer care coordinator, neither has she. I contacted Honda SA to investigate the matter as to why the dowell pin was loose. The car is no longer under any warranty but due to the replacement of the clutch at 20 000km (by Honda for the previous owner) I find that the fault could be due to negligence by the mechanic. Honda cannot deny this but still I am held liable for the costs for what may have been caused by them. A better investigation should have been led by Honda SA.
