Warn out Break discs

On the 25th October I booked my vehicle aveo 1.6 LS in for its 15000km service.
I informed McCarthy Hatfield who did my service that there is a shudder in the breaks and a rattle in the gear lever.
I was later contacted and advised that the break discs and breaks need to be replaced/skimmed. this would cost me over R2000.
I Advised not to replace as I could not believe that break discs can be warn out in 12months.
I then spoke to several people who advised that break discs would not wear out within 1 year of purchase, my opel corsa travelled more and I only replaced my discs at /- 75 000km,
so how is it possible to that this vehicles discs need to be replaced. this tells me I was sold a dud vehicle. secondly there is a terrible rattle in the gear lever which was not attended to.
if this vehicle traveled alot i would agree but its used to go to work and back which is about 15km a day. This is rediculous
