Maharaja Indian Restaurant
Maharaja Not What It Used to Be

Cafes, Bars, Restaurants

I booked on Saturday night for my brother visiting from the UK, his wife and child. Our relationship with this restaurant goes back many years and I have never had a bad meal there. Used to have great atmosphere and superb food. The moment we walked in I knew something was different. The restaurant has a shabby, down-at-heel feeling that was never there before. Still, we chose to judge it by its food, not the decor. The first disappointment was the structure of the starter menu - all platters for two allowing little choice. Traditionally, the table orders a range of dishes to sample them all but this was not possible. Then we asked for poppadoms for the table. We were then told that that they were "out" of poppadoms. I always thought they were made fresh. Besides that, what kind of Indian restaurant does not put poppadoms on the table for people to snack on while perusing the menu? That was it for me. The manager was friendly but unhelpful and did not even see the ridiculousness of the situation. We paid for the drinks and left. We had a great meal at Ghazal at Peter Place (which was packed compared to the 8 people in the Maharaja). We will not be going back. It's past it's heyday.
