Mike's Kitchen
Halaal and no alcohol despite cosmopolitan area

Cafes, Bars, Restaurants

One expects a uniform standard from Mike's Kitchen operators. So it was uncomfortable to find once we had taken our seats in the Rosebank restaurant (in The Zone) in what is one of South Africa's most cosmopolitan and tourist-frequented areas, that the menu was halaal, and that it was also not possible to have wine or beer with the meal as one would expect from a Mike's Kitchen. (In fact the restaurant could not even provide a [non-alcoholic] tomato cocktail, which further irritated our party).

On later investigation the restaurant did indeed have a Halaal sign on the door, but this was not prominent when the door was open. Nor was there any indication that alcohol was unavailable.

We appreciate the absolute right of the Moslem community to have a restaurant conforming to their strict principles, but for such a high-profile franchise operation as Mike's Kitchen, should it really be in one of South Africa's prime and most mixed (tourist) areas, and should it not be made VERY clear in advance that there is no alcohol? We will not be back, and watched a party of tourists get up and leave very obviously for the same reason.
