TOO MUCH INTEREST

In 2007 I took out R8000.00 loan and I was unable to pay for few months, now later when I tried to pay i was suprised to see the interest charged... now I want to pay it, it amounts to R40000.00 i would like to know how do they charge their interest because their interest is too much... I tried calling them and I want to know why so many interest but I did not win
