Outstanding transactions authorised on card

My mother's card was swallowed by a Standard Bank ATM about a month ago. Immediately after the incident, she went into the nearest branch in Sancardia (Pretoria) to stop the card, only to find out that the card was used between the time of her leaving the ATM and reporting at the branch (Only logical reasoning I could form was someone had installed a defrauding device on the card slot). At that point the card was stopped with transactions that were waiting to be authorised. But for some reason even after her reporting, Standard Bank went ahead and authorised these transactions. Now they are saying that she will not be able to recover that amount as she did not phone them in time. Someone please advise on steps to take.
