Cheque stamped Not Transferable ifo SARS cashed

Cheque no 2720 hand delivered to SARS Alberton and inserted in mail box at the gate house.
The cheque was and deposited via ATM at FNB Melrose into private individual's account, confirmed by Ms Shallin Tlale. Ms Tlale advised us to open a case - which was duly undertaken by us. It is amazing how FNB allowed this deposit since the cheque was made out to South African Revenue Services and stamped Not Transferable A/c Payee only. On the back of the cheque is written For: A.B. Mjiako Acc 62405501497.
My bank Standard Southdale have done all in their power to try and assist us by corresponding with FNB's dept but have reached a deadend. FNB's department requested a letter from SARS stating that they never deposited the cheque nor benefited from the funds - this was done by Mr Y Mundie SARS Ant-corruption dept Pretoria.
In the meantime we have paid SARS via EFT for Mar & Apr Vat again
We have received a letter from FNB stating that SARS are the true owners of the cheque since it was delivered to their offices and SARS must therefore be the claimant.
What happens now - do we get reimbursed since this error is FNB's for cashing Not Transferable cheque ifo SARS??
