Ebucks at Checkers VERY confusing

How does Ebucks work at Checkers? I handed my ebucks card to cashier and instead of earning ebucks as I asked her to do - she processed a "spend" transaction. When I questioned this with the cashier and then the manager they both said that you can only earn ebucks if you DON'T swipe your ebucks card but rather pay by the linked fnb credit card??? Is this right? When I go to Dischem or Makro they swipe the ebucks card and then my credit card. Please clarify - it doesn't make sense!
