Bank Fees charged due to banks erro

Purchased my Groceries from Pick n Pay on the 14 December 2012 using my cheque card under the assumption that the money will be debited off my account immediately or at least 2 days later. Using the card during the month and taking the balance on cell phone banking as correct. on the 7 January 2013 Standard bank ran the debit for the groceries (nearly a month later) with no notification of this delay. Pushing my account into overdraft (a facility that i do not have) Still no notification. I received notifications that my debit orders have gone off my account but not notified that they actually bounced due to this problem. Standard bank than charged fees for the debit orders bouncing, than further charging Honouring fees because the account went into overdraft than further charging an interest on overdraft. After contactig the bank the reply was we apologise however its the merchants error. This is totally unacceptable to charge exorbitant fees caused by the banks delay. I understand that it is ultimately my responsibility to keep track of my account however surely Standard bank as the service provider has the responsibility to carry out there service timeously.
