Standard Bank
Misleading, Grossly Inflated Bank Statement Charge

Business & Finance

I requested an electronic statement for an extended period. The consultant told me it would cost R20. I was charged R1780 because Standard Bank claims the consultant said R20 per page. If this is the case, then it is obvious that this customer was not aware of this and the potential cost implications as it was never explained. The consultant at no point ever mentioned the potential size of the statement which I think is a misrepresentation of pricing. There has been much back and forth between Standard Bank and I and it's been one excuse after another. The latest excuse is that because I never requested a confirmation of the final price I should be held liable. Why would I request confirmation of a price I was completely unaware of? Shouldn't the bank offer to confirm the price? The only time I ever paid for bank statement was when printing was involved, why is this different? How can a bank charge you on a price that was only partially disclosed i.e. the price per page but not the number of pages? Does Standard Bank also hold liable illiterates who sign contracts they don't understand? What if it was 1000 pages instead of 100 pages? Is this not exploitation of a misunderstanding?
