Automated sales calls and rude agents

In what universe is it acceptable to try and sell something to customers via AUTOMATED sales calls? And then put the phone down when probing questions are asked about where they got my personal details?

Clientele Life sends out these automated calls. As I find them rude I have asked them to call me - so that I can waste as much of their time as they see fit to waste of mine. It costs me a few minutes, but it will cost them phone calls, infrastructure, support structures, IT, salaries etc. and I will take up as much of their resources as possible - and they will NEVER sell me anything.

I was also told they got my details from "a national database" - and the call centre agent at Quality Assessment Call Centres suggested that this was a RICA database or a database owned by the government. Is the government selling our personal details? She refused to give me any further information and effectively put the phone down on me.

If Franco Pretorius - the sales director - considers it clever to get a few clients through questionable sales methods, perhaps the marketing director can educate him about the longer-term damage he is causing the the brand.
